Your card in everyday life: PIN, limits and notifications

You can’t remember your PIN at the cash machine, or the machine only allows you to withdraw a smaller amount than expected. It’s good to know what to do in situations like these. Find out how to manage your card PIN in the Swiss Bankers app, what limits apply to top-ups and cash withdrawals, and how to set up alerts for payments or a low account balance.

Manage your PIN – view or change your PIN

You’ll need your card PIN when withdrawing cash from a cash machine. The terminal may also ask for it when you’re paying in a shop. If you’ve forgotten your PIN or would like to change it, the Swiss Bankers app can help.

  1. Open the Swiss Bankers app and select the relevant card.

  2. Open ‘Card settings & PIN’.

  3. View your PIN or set a new one. You do not need your current PIN to change it.

Choose a combination for your new PIN that is difficult to guess. Avoid using your date of birth or parts of your telephone number, for example. When travelling, a four-digit PIN is recommended, as many terminals and cash machines abroad only accept four-digit codes.

Check your limits – balance and cash withdrawals

The available card balance determines whether you can make payments. You can check this at any time in the Swiss Bankers app. Amounts already reserved – for example, when filling up with petrol – may temporarily reduce your available balance. The limits for top-ups and card balances depend on the card product.

  • Life and Life Digital: The minimum top-up amount is CHF 100. For Life, the maximum card balance is CHF 10,000. For Life Digital, it is up to CHF 10,000, depending on your identification level.

  • Travel: The minimum top-up amount is 100, and the maximum card balance is 10,000, in the card’s currency (CHF, EUR or USD).

  • Prime: Depending on your bank’s terms and conditions, you can top up between 100 and 20,000 per transaction in the card currency (CHF, EUR or USD).

  • Value: With this prepaid card for businesses, the issuing company or institution determines how much credit you receive and tops up the card.

When withdrawing cash, the ATM operator sets the limit per withdrawal. In many countries, amounts equivalent to around CHF 200 to 1,000 per withdrawal are possible. For purely digital cards, the cash machine must support contactless cash withdrawals. If you wish to withdraw cash several times on the same day, you can check with Swiss Bankers Customer Service to see whether a daily limit applies to your card. Please note that fees may apply for each withdrawal.

Enable notifications – keep track of your transactions

With push notifications from the Swiss Bankers app, you’ll be notified whenever your card is debited or topped up. For example, you’ll see when an online shop debits the amount for your order or when your next subscription payment is due. Enable push notifications in the app and check that your smartphone allows notifications for the app.

If you wish, you can also receive a message when your balance falls below CHF 100 or below a higher amount that you have set. This allows you to top up your balance before your next purchase. If you’d like to be notified even when you’re offline, the SMS service (subject to a charge) is available.

If you receive a notification about a payment that you cannot recognise, check the transaction directly in the app. To find out what to do if you suspect fraud, read the article ‘Reporting unknown charges: how to proceed correctly’.

Conclusion – Well prepared for everyday payments

Whether you’re shopping, making online payments or using an ATM – a quick check in the Swiss Bankers app helps you manage your card in everyday life. Before making any major purchases, check your available balance and set up notifications for debits and low balances. When withdrawing cash, be aware of the cash machine’s withdrawal limits and the fees charged per transaction.
